As the saying goes:”All good things must come to an end”. And so it must with my arduous but deeply rewarding journey as editor-in-chief of the Saudi Journal of Otorhinolarynygology-Head and Neck Surgery. The issue between your hands is the last that I’m editing, hence the ‘farewell.' Having done this for more than twenty years, I felt the time has come for me to step aside and give way to someone else to carry on this remarkable job.

Allow me to let you in for a piece of history. Naturally, just as they must have endings, all things have beginnings. The Saudi Otorhinolaryngology Society came into being in 1987 when six motivated E.N.T. surgeons (I happened to be one of them) have decided to establish a society whose main objective was and still is the dissemination of scientific knowledge in the field. To achieve this, besides holding seminars and conferences, a specialized publication was a must. In 1988, I had the honor of publishing the first Bulletin of the Society which was followed by several more. In due time, and in 1997 the Saudi Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery was launched and I was appointed its editor-in-chief. The first issue appeared in January 1998 and, I must add, it was a resounding success. It must be admitted that, from its very beginnings, this fledgling Journal forged a strong and rewarding relationship with the late Prof. Wolfgang Draf which lasted till his death in 2011. Prof. Draf was a huge asset and a pillar of support for this Journal throughout.

Over the years, the Journal went through various stages of development heading steadily towards maturity. Very quickly it became well-known and much sought after. Many of my fellow academicians, from both Saudi and international universities, got their promotions partly through publishing in this Journal. It may be added that all through its history, this Journal never missed a single issue of publication. Throughout, I carried out the work single-handedly, which was sometimes rather overwhelming, but it was a great source of pleasure and enrichment for me. Along the way, I had the unlimited support of my colleagues both inside and outside Saudi Arabia. To all of them I extend my profound and sincere gratitude. My profuse thanks go to all the members of the Editorial Board as well as the International Advisory Board. My deep appreciation is due to all the reviewers, readers and contributors to this Journal.

Lastly, I am eternally indebted to my wife and three daughters for their continued support and endless patience; they had to put up with my regular absences as I was working at my computer. As I leave the Journal, it gives me great pleasure to announce a new development in the Journal’s steady road towards progress; a website which I have created in collaboration with Weblink India. Net Pvt. Ltd. (www.saudijournalorlhans.com) will soon be accessible.

Before I go, a word of advice: for this Journal to grow even stronger and to continue to offer its sizable contribute to the literature of the field, a physical office needs to be provided (I was working from home), complete with secretarial staff and specialists to run the website.

Finally, I wish my successor the best of luck, and the Journal more and more progress.

My warmest regards to all my colleagues,
